The [1]issue affects application that use the [2]Enhanced Video Renderer , a legacy Windows feature that Microsoft has superseded by the Simple Video Renderer.
The glitches - interruptions, freezing, or a black screen - occur when HDCP is enabled or when Digital Rights Management (DRM) is applied to digital audio. Streaming services are not affected.
[3]
According to Microsoft, the problem first appeared in the August 29 Windows non-security preview update ("or later updates"). Microsoft currently has no workaround or fix for affected users beyond pausing updates entirely.
[4]
[5]
Microsoft is encouraging developers to migrate legacy EVR APIs to the newer renderer APIs. However, breaking existing applications seems like an unncecessarily harsh method to push for this transition.
The technical issue remains contained for now, although had streaming video been affected, the impact could have been catastrophic - just think of the cries of anguish from Netflix and YouTube users.
[6]
The bug comes as physical media is experiencing somewhat of a [7]resurgence . Rather than paying a monthly subscription only for some media to drop out of a streamer's catalog when a license expires, consumers are returning to DVDs.

Microsoft giveth and Microsoft taketh away
The playback glitch comes as Microsoft confirms it has fixed another longstanding [12]issue with Windows 11 24H2 that affected integrated cameras and facial recognition features. This bug, which could render Windows Hello "unresponsive," was serious enough for Microsoft to implement a compatibility hold preventing the update's distribution.
Microsoft acknolwedged the issue on October 18, 2024, lifted the compatibility hold on on September 11, 2025, and finally flagged the bug as resolved on eight days later. Just in time for the arrival of Windows 11 25H2. ®

Re: W11 from bean to cup we fk it up
They must be prompting Copilot wrong.
But I need EVR?
Else I cannot watch my videos interpolated to 60 Hz (4k) or 120 Hz (FullHD or less). SVP (SmoothVideo Project) helps me to get a more fluent motion, in MPC-HC (Media Player Classic, Home Cinema), and there in EVR.
Well, switched from Wind 11 24h2 to Server 2025 on this machine last weekend, and so far video still plays fine. My Win11 had some weird unsolvable DISM errors, and since it was installed fresh in 2011 with Windows 7 and all upgrades, which _all_ ran fine until 24h2 it seems, it was time. Also I wanted to avoid whatever MS will be trying on me with 25h2...
I recommend switching to the "real professional" Windows OS if you have to stay there like me. And yes, the games work fine.
Offtopic, but recent updates to sql server broke a long standing used "hole"
Latest SQL Server update for us broke the hole that allowed a "service" to locally query SQL Server without auth. A hole for sure, so we had to fix by using a priv'd local id in the db, but... another "surprise". This might affect others as well.
When are MS going to be prosecuted
for unauthorised tampering with computer systems?
It's so so good to be not running any MS software.
What a surprise, not
” This bug, which could render Windows Hello "unresponsive," was serious enough for Microsoft to implement a compatibility hold preventing the update's distribution.”
So if a bug stops a MS feature of questionable added value from working, the update is put on hold, if it prevents people from doing real work or using their system, just keep it rolling…
Schadenfreude
Microsoft in the day were a big proponent of DRM technology, and the question of technology obselence was consistently demeaned at the time, It could not happen to a nicer company
Woo AI
Vibe Coding with no QA testing continues to be doing great!
Aside from the Q.A. fail...
DRM. When it's more important to prevent you from seeing or doing something than that it actually works well...
Once again preventing someone from using their legitimately obtained content properly...
W11 from bean to cup we fk it up
That a primary finding of mine with W11. MS aren't even getting the most basic things right.
