UK tech minister booted out in weekend cabinet reshuffle

(2025/09/08)

UK prime minister Sir Keir Starmer cleared out the officials in charge of tech and digital law in a dramatic cabinet reshuffle at the weekend.

Former work and pensions secretary Liz Kendall has replaced Peter Kyle as science, innovation and technology secretary and will take over responsibility for the controversial Online Safety Act, which has drawn criticism with regard to [1]privacy and [2]censorship .

Starmer was forced into the reshuffle after Angela Rayner resigned as deputy PM amid a media frenzy over her tax affairs - specifically, she underpaid stamp duty on a property.

[3]

Kyle will become secretary of state for business and trade after a tenure at the science and technology ministry that included overseeing the introduction of the government's [4]Cyber Security and Resilience (CSR) Bill .

[5]

[6]

Among his other achievements was a [7]"partnership" with Google , in which the ad giant will "aim to upskill up to 100,000 civil servants in the latest tech by 2030."

[12]Kyle was also responsible for planning a team within the Department for Science, Innovation and Technolog (DSIT) to "join up public services" and avoid citizens telling dozens of public sector bodies the same information. In a bid to improve public sector efficiency, the minister announced a new package of AI tools nicknamed Humphrey, in homage to the classic British satirical TV comedy Yes Minister.

Meanwhile, Poppy Gustafsson has left her role as the UK's investment minister. The former Darktrace CEO [13]was hired to draw on her business experience to promote the UK as an attractive place to invest and do business and got a peerage at the same time. Jason Stockwood will replace her as minister of state (minister for investment) jointly in the Department for Business and Trade and HM Treasury.

Kanishka Narayan has been appointed as a new under-secretary in DSIT, while Ian Murray will become minister of state jointly in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the DSIT.

[14]

Lord Vallance has been appointed as minister of state in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. He will remain minister of state in DSIT. ®

If only there was a way of searching the UK government's website for news of ministerial appointments and seeing their biographies.

Re: Who?

elsergiovolador

They probably taken it down, because it only returned pictures of c*nts. Probably not compliant with Online Safety Act.

Re: Who?

James O'Shea

Surely not. When last I saw it, there were pix of horses' arses. Especially the one of the alleged occupant of 10 Downing St.

Re: Who?

Or even better, a way of searching for multiple, possibly less biassed sources of information.

Re: Who?

Good luck with that; a variety of biases (including one's own) is as good as it gets. Same as it ever was.

No new deckchairs were purchased in the course of this rearrangement.

"join up public services"

Shirley Knot

Ooookaaay. Yeah, we strive to avoid redundant data duplication. We also strive to avoid connecting systems in a way that allows for (eg) lateral movement in breached systems. My point is that these donkeys can't run shit when it comes to data systems, and all-eggs-in-one-basket is guaranteed to end in a flustercuck.

Also, don't usurp Yes Minister. We love that show, it's ours and it doesn't make you cool, bugger off.

[Edit: "Humphrey". I'm more inclined to associate this case's use with Unigate's "Watch out, watch out—there's a Humphrey about!".]

Indeed - I suspect that after this November's budget, we'll all feel like we've been Humphrey'd

Just hypothetically imagine Rayner was the bottom of the barrel. Now she has left who could you replace her with that would improve confidence in our government? Is there anyone in this government who could take over any position and improve upon the existing lot?

Going further than that, when looking at the other parties who would we feel confident to replace the current one?

"when looking at the other parties who would we feel confident to replace the current one?"

Jedit

None of them, which is the problem. You've got three varieties of Tory scum - red, yellow and Classic Blue - the Greens, who are in the right place on a lot of issues but remain Luddites when it comes to nuclear power and who have a strong TERF fringe, and the SNP who don't stand outside Scotland and have many other issues.

I don't include Reform as they are not a genuine political party; they're a private company with Nigel Farage as sole board member. But even if they were a party I wouldn't want them in government because however incapable the existing parties may be of performing the duties of government, Reform members don't even appear to know what those duties are . After their recent round of victories in local elections a lot of the newly minted councillors resigned within days - some even before being sworn in. They'd be a unmitigated disaster even by recent standards. (Oh, and they're also fucking Nazis, but I shouldn't need to mention that.)

You mean repeating Russian talking points on matters of national security?

It's interesting that so many fringe or rejected politicians suddenly come out of the shadows and talk exactly what Moscow would like to hear. Very interesting... *wink*

"who have a strong TERF fringe,"

Do you honestly believe that men wearing dresses and calling themselves women is something normal ? You are pushing an agenda based on bullying, which is a very masculine trait for a woman to have.

Do people that like eating nuts have the right to call themselves squirrels and then claim that that is should be an offense to be called by any other name ?

If feelings are what makes your sex/gender then does that mean that God/Nature got it wrong, please explain how that works. And no the absolutely tiny 0.000000001 percentages of anything chromosomal related is not an explanation, that is simply intellectual dishonesty.

And why the need to use insulting language, if you have no argument it is far more intelligent to remain silent. And yes TERF is an insult and you are offensive.

It's amazing just how offensive your kind of radicalization is to the largest majority of people.

Would that be comparable to the 0.000000001 percentage of people who - despite the deafening noise - are actually personally affected in any way by trans issues?

Are you proposing to overthrow a government elected in a vote that expressed the clear Will Of The British People?

For shame! Such a turn of events would surely destroy any vestige of confidence that we up here try to fool the lower orders to have in the shadow puppetry that is the parliamentary representative democracy.

That's the problem isn't it?

Rayner was their top tier, best of the best. At the rate they're losing ministers he's gotta find another 40 to get to the general election.

I agree about Liz Kendal's lack of STEM educational background. However her CV as far as one can rely on Wikipedia is a bit more reassuring. It will be interesting to see which way she steers this stuff.

"cabinet reshuffle"

Prst. V.Jeltz

Cabinet reshuffles exist because greasy pole climbers consider their own career path more important than staying in a job long enough to learn how to do it properly.

Re: "cabinet reshuffle"

Like a badger

Being a minister comes with a vast range of responsibilities, and it typically takes about two years for them to have a good grasp of their brief if they've no relevant experience. Starmer put together a cabinet that's barely lasted a year, and then has a round of musical chairs for most of the top jobs, in most cases managing to find candidates even more poorly qualified than the predecessor.

I had such high hopes that Starmer would bring logic, a modicum of competence, stability, and some welcome dullness to British government. Instead he's flunked the immigration issue and in consequence been panicked into a catastrophic and pointless reshuffle that won't last long. We're already back to Johnson's years of chaos.

In the next episode of "How to run a whelk stall", the government will attempt something (possibly even something sensible) that pisses off even more of their own backbenchers, and this will lead to the threat of losing a parliamentary vote; A leadership challenge emerges, and either Starmer goes and we end up with somebody of even lower competence (eg Streeting), or Starmer waddles on, damaged but still leader in name. But not leader in nature, because he'd then be desperately cautious to avoid offending the left wing of the party.

It is nice to think there's some competence in Downing Street, but I'd guess he's probably doing more snoozing than mousing, as he's 18 now and that's going some for a cat.

I hope he'll get a state funeral when the sad time comes.
