Although the Space Launch System (SLS) has had two missions restored – Artemis 4 and 5 – and the Gateway, a lunar space station, put back on the agenda, there is no reprieve for NASA's science programs, which are set to be halved.
The bill, which Trump nicknamed the "One Big Beautiful Bill," is part of the Trump administration's budget reconciliation package. It includes transformative legislation that provides funding for critical infrastructure upgrades and offers tax relief. It cleared the House and Senate last week and, as it stands, will severely curtail the funds available to the US space agency.

The Planetary Society has [2]called the budget an "extinction-level event," and this week [3]released a joint statement from every living former head of NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) – the agency's top science leadership position – condemning the White House's proposed 47 percent cut.

Meanwhile, [6]there appear to be sufficient funds to transport a Space Shuttle from one museum to another, with $85 million allotted to the undertaking. Former NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver [7]lamented : "If this is the priority for our tax dollars, we are doomed." Garver noted that to move the Shuttle would require dismantling the orbiter, which would likely cause irreparable damage.

Former Space Shuttle Program Manager Wayne Hale also chimed in with a [13]reminder of his suspicions from 2011 about why Houston didn't get a Shuttle in the first place. While the Shuttle was largely designed and the program managed from the region, "Houston is [was] blasé about the shuttles. Houston and Texas have come to regard NASA and JSC [Johnson Space Center] as entitlements. We deserve JSC and the shuttle just because of who we are. Not true. Anything worthwhile is worth fighting for."
NASA Watch's Keith Cowing [14]reported that changes were already afoot within NASA regarding mission terminations. "NASA is acting as if FY 2026 request is the de facto operating plan going forth," he wrote. "Dozens of NASA mission teams are scrambling to complete shutdown plans to make it easier for NASA to start flipping the OFF switch on short notice."
[15]
NASA did not confirm these reports. A spokesperson told The Register : "We are aware of the provisions included in the One Big Beautiful Bill for NASA. The agency is currently awaiting further guidance from the White House Office of Management and Budget on how we will move forward to implement this legislation and remains committed to executing upon the President's vision for the future of space as we usher in the Golden Age of human space exploration and innovation."
Embrace the challenge indeed. ®

Re: Heathens
Why go to space when they have all the answer in scriptures. Like it says in the bible, Jesus believed in the right to bear arms.
Re: Heathens
I agree with the second part of your post, but suspect they are as ignorant of the prices of essentials as anyone whose groceries are bought for them by 'someone else'.

I totally agree.
Question : is it worthwhile having a President that is not a convicted felon ?
Discuss.
Far be it from me to quibble….
…. with the renowned Mr. Cowing, but if he, or you, or I were a high panjandrum at NASA, wouldn’t we be planning for both the worst (Felon-in-Chief’s budget proposal) and best (FY25 funding levels plus a bit for ramp-up of missions under development, less a bit for extended-phase missions already scheduled for termination), and probably some scenarios in between — even if the hum, and shuffle their feet, and look at the ceiling if asked about alternate budget plans. Or so it was when I used to meet with such folks two or three times a year. In fact, for someone who’s been around as long as Mr. Cowing to profess not to know that is at best disingenuous.
Re: Far be it from me to quibble….
Why would you assume they haven't? And why would you also assume they would reveal the details of those plans to the enemy?
"a joint statement from every living former head of NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) – the agency's top science leadership position – condemning the White House's proposed 47 percent cut"
I suspect that the current US Administration will take that as confirming that they are 'doing the right thing'. After all, NASA is one of the science organisations that has confirmed with actual scientific observations that the climate is getting hotter due to human activities.
> actual scientific observations that the climate is getting hotter due to human activities
One thing intelligent people struggle with is the assumption that idiots are responding to specific concerns with a thought out response.
This is a visceral reaction to people they cannot acknowledge are smarter than they are. It is pure thoughtless violence.
The fact that someone with a whole 'nother neuron can smooth it over using words of more than a single syllable is simply a bonus, but they'll still keep that intellectu ... smart guy at arm's length.
I do wonder....
...how many of these top dogs in charge of the various agencies voted for Trump?
Then again, it won't be them losing their homes (and healthcare).
Heathens
