It [1]announced that posts would be coming to an end this week, with affected accounts, such as [2]Voyager , pinning text along the lines of "Important Update: As part of @NASA's effort to streamline communications, this account will be archived in the coming weeks" to the top of their feeds.
To be clear, the Voyager mission itself is not affected, just the mission's social media presence.
[3]
While the archiving of some accounts, such as @NASA_SLS and @NASA_Orion, has a certain logic, mothballing Voyager and the Mars rovers makes less sense.
[4]
[5]
After all, the current US administration is determined to cancel NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) unless certain US lawmakers [6]have their way . However, Voyager will continue its mission, and the Mars rovers will keep on trundling regardless. In addition, the @MarsCuriosity feed currently has approximately four million followers, considerably more than the one and a half million of the @NASAMars account.
The @NASANewHorizons account, for the probe that flew past Pluto, was axed a few weeks ago, with users directed to the @NASASolarSystem account. @NASAVoyager will shortly be joining it.
[7]
According to space agency, this is all about "Improving the experience of NASA followers."
A spokesperson for NASA told The Register , "The agency continues to take steps to strengthen and streamline NASA's digital presence through an ongoing social media consolidation effort.
"With more than 300 agency accounts across 15 platforms, we have an opportunity to better focus our messaging and connect more clearly with the public.
[8]
"This initiative will help us fulfill our responsibility to share NASA's story widely and effectively – by reducing the number of accounts, improving the signal-to-noise ratio of content, and making our messaging more unified and accessible."
So nothing whatsoever to do with cuts that could be headed the agency's way or dodging an awkward social media moment if an axe should fall on a perfectly functional mission, right? No, this is all about consolidating posts, so users keen on following the Voyager mission don't have to bother hunting down a feed for the spacecraft; it'll all be under @NASASolarSystem and @NASAJPL.
Affected accounts, such as @NASAVoyager, will run a version of their greatest hits before the end finally comes and someone presses the archive button. As for what "archived" means, there will be no more posts, and eventually the account will be removed. A spokesperson told us, "As part of this process, we're working to ensure compliance with record retention requirements."

"And as appropriate, content associated with accounts that are sunset[ted] will be promoted through other agency platforms."
Someone at NASA HQ hitting the delete archive key on the agency's socials is nothing new. Former Shuttle boss Wayne Hale [13]noted the excising of this blog posts from NASA's site earlier this year.
However, with the space agency struggling to demonstrate its importance and engage with a seemingly disinterested public, axing the social feeds of missions that have captured the imagination, such as Voyager and the Curiosity and Perseverance Mars rovers, in favor of a consolidation feels a little like a step backwards in terms of outreach. ®

In today's environment any mention of Voyager must be a bitter reminder for NASA scientists and engineers of how just how great NASA used to be.
Flat Earthers vote MAGA too

[1]Trump supporters claim Earth isn't round in viral video
So NASA must keep a low profile just to prevent more unwanted attention.
The Trump administration already wants to [2]shut down one of the two Ligo gravity wave telescopes which will make the other one next to useless.
And Ligo was the biggest discovery in the last hundred years in physics.

Re: Flat Earthers vote MAGA too
And Ligo was the biggest discovery in the last hundred years in physics.
In what sense was LIGO "discovered"? Did someone stub their toe on it, look down and say "Oh look, there's a gravitational wave observatory"?
The assertion that even the observations were the most significant discovery is sheer hyperbole in any case. There had long been observational evidence of gravitational waves (orbital decay of binary pulsars) and a century is a long time. Hell we didn't know about an expending universe a century ago. Forget the Higgs Boson, we didn't even know of the neutron.
However, Voyager will continue its mission,
Yes it will, as even one of Trumps insane executive orders cannot overcome the laws of physics.
Though that might not stop him trying. After all, control is everything to a king.
Oh, in case you are wondering, the joke icon is for Trump's behaviour, not my comment.
No tears children ..
It's all part of the dismantling of the state and it's agencies the people voted for. That's their country and their mess. Too bad for them. I got no sympathy left. Time to head out and get drunk.

"It's all part of the dismantling of the state and it's agencies the people voted for."
That's what you get when people think they can 'improve' their lives to the detriment of others. In the end they too will get the short end of the stick.
Fascist pawns never get the good life.
Instead of going in a blaze of glory, or fading gently into the endless night, Voyager will get a shameful death by beancounter.
What an ignominious end for one of mankind stellar achievements
yes, in theory this announcement has nothing to do with the end of the mission, but we all know MAGAs are itching to pull the plug on them scary sciency thingamajigs

Yep ...
Scary sciency and expensive thingamajigs.
Much better give all that money some good use, m'urica needs more bible study schools.

Save APOD
One of NASA's most popular outreach initiatives, probably.
Although they could possibly stop showing us the Crab Nebula pictures.
Re: Save APOD
You sure it is the same Crab Nebula every time?
It wouldn't surprise me if carcinisation is a thing in space too!
Improving the experience of NASA followers.
They are saving their followers the trauma of hearing the screams as all the science missions are fed into the shredder.
