Windows 11 poised to beat 10, mostly because it has to

The latest figures from [1]Statcounter show the increase in Windows 11's market share accelerating, while Windows 10 declines.
Before Champagne corks start popping in Redmond, it is worth noting that Windows 10 still accounts for over half the market – 54.2 percent – and Windows 11 now accounts for 42.69 percent. However, if the current trends continue, Windows 10 should finally drop below the 50 percent mark next month and be surpassed by Windows 11 shortly after.
[2]
The cause is likely due to enterprises pushing the upgrade button rather than having to deal with extended support for Windows 10. Support for most Windows 10 versions ends on October 14, 2025, and Microsoft has shown no signs of deviating from its plan to retire the veteran operating system.
[3]
Windows 11 debuted in 2021, accompanied by an infamous [4]hardware compatibility list that prevented many computers that were perfectly happy running Windows 10 from being able to install Microsoft's latest and greatest. Users soon found workarounds, and some turned to alternatives, but four years on, much of the offending hardware – at least at an enterprise level – has either already been refreshed or soon will be. The new kit is Windows 11-capable.

[8]Microsoft declares 2025 'the year of the Windows 11 PC refresh'
Whether users actually want the operating system is another matter. Windows 11 offers few compelling features that justify an upgrade and no killer application. The looming October 14 support cut-off date is likely to be the major driving factor behind the move to Windows 11.
Microsoft and its hardware partners are facing a similar problem with AI PCs. For many users, there remains no application that demands the new hardware. Hence, they are unlikely to upgrade before the next hardware refresh, regardless of how loudly the company promotes Copilot.
Despite Windows 11's accelerating market share and the narrowing gap between it and Windows 10, the figures show that, with only a few months remaining until Microsoft discontinues support, there are still many devices running the old operating system. ®

Re: How long...
Have been getting nag screens from M$ for quite a while now.
Perfectly good PC, but the CPU is not on their list.
So it'll be a new motherboard and CPU.
I should be able to keep the same memory. Don't run games so don't need a graphics card. Sound and network cards should be OK.
But no doubt I'll still have to convince M$ that I haven't bought a new PC, before W11 will activate. Last time I had to do this they demanded to see my actual orders for components, because they were adamant that I was running a new machine.
Interesting discussion here about when a machine is actually "new" or "the same machine". See also electric guitars, Trigger's broom, and the Ship of Theseus.
Re: How long...
Yeah, my Windows 10 machine as actually an upgraded Windows 7 Pro key, and I've no idea if it still qualifies for a fresh installation. I'm sure I'll find out in October when I can't be arsed to avoid the problem anymore.
Right now, I've just disabled TPM2.0 in the bios, which is enough to make Microsoft leave me alone with their surprise upgrades that they've tried in the past.
what a waste
The amount of perfectly good hardware that will be destructively disposed of go to landfill and flood ebay, which will be perfectly capable of running win 11 without AI and could have the tpm via pcmcia, pci or usb if it actually makes a difference to successful attacks, which will all work with the workarounds and can all run linux is criminal. I mean I might buy a few on ebay but its bad for client organisations, its bad for the environment, with trumps tariffs its going to sour relationships with vendors due to the massive cost vendors will likely make less money off of deals their customers like less than the deals they could have had last year and charged less for with more profit. I work in software support and I have never been happier not to be involved with hardware.
Never mind the OS think of all those extra Costs
[FOR USA ONLY]
they may well end up in Trump's pocket.
Those shiny new PC's/Laptops for W11 will now cost more than a week ago. Well done Donald. I hope that [cough][cough] donation to your PAC from Microsoft was worth it.
meanwhile, the rest of the world is thinking long and hard about their relationship with the USA. I expect a lot of people will give MS (And thereby the USA) the finger and move to Linux.
Personally, I have deferred buying any IT kit or software from US companies until Trump is out of office.
What are the Linux stats? I shifted my perfectly good but not good enough for W11 desktop to 'nix last week.
We get this every Windows release
Endless handwringing that the adoption is slow.
Then eventually everyone upgrades. Because computers eventually break…
How long...
Before the 'nag-screens' start ?
Oooohhh.... It looks like you're still running Windows 10.... Maybe you should go out and buy a new computer with the latest shiny shiny OS ???
Now with extra vendor lock-in, 'A.I.' bullcrap and even more telemetry !
Oh, and we're really REALLY going to try and force you to create a MS-account this time... promise !
Fark off MS...
