Mesa's Zink Now Offers VA-API Video Acceleration Atop Vulkan Video

([Mesa] 66 Minutes Ago VA-API On Vulkan)

Merged today to Mesa 26.3 is initial video acceleration support for the generic Zink Gallium3D driver built atop the Vulkan APIs. What this implementation allows is exposing Video Acceleration API (VA-API) implemented atop the Vulkan Video interfaces.

With the code merged for Mesa 26.3, Vulkan Video can ultimately be leveraged by applications targeting the common Linux VA-API interface for video acceleration. This has been a project a few years in the making by Mike Blumenkrantz of Valve and David Airlie of Red Hat.

Before getting too excited, at the moment this Zink video acceleration implementation only supports H.264 video decoding at the moment and not any other formats. Most of the testing has so far been with the Radeon RADV driver. There is H.265 and AV1 video acceleration code being worked on but not yet merged.

Those intrigued by this VA-API on Vulkan Video support can learn more about this implementation via [1]this Mesa merge request .

"Athens built the Acropolis. Corinth was a commercial city, interested in
purely materialistic things. Today we admire Athens, visit it, preserve the
old temples, yet we hardly ever set foot in Corinth."
