Back in May we spotted [1]a Linux patch adding "Panther Lake R" as a rugged version of Panther Lake intended for "use in harsh environments". Since Linux 7.2 we have seen some bits of Panther Lake R driver support added while for the upcoming Linux 7.4 cycle there is additional enablement happening for this Panther Lake derivative.
While not explicitly stated, it's believed that Rugged Panther Lake SoC is the is what was announced this summer as [2]Intel Starfire SoC built for extremes as a Panther Lake SoC built for space-grade survivability.
Among the work spotted more recently around Rugged Panther Lake is adding support for it to the [3]intel-uncore-freq driver as the frequency scaling driver for the Intel CPU uncore components. There is also a patch for the [4]Intel PMC driver with Rugged Panther Lake. The Intel PMC driver is for the Power Management Controller for managing the hardware registers and power-saving states on Intel client hardware. Those patches are coming to Linux 7.4 by way of the x86 platform drivers tree.
Via the Linux power management tree is also Rugged Panther Lake support for the [5]intel_tcc_cooling driver used for [6]downclocking your CPU at a lower threshold .
Linux 7.4 is also adding Rugged Panther Lake support in the [7]turbostat tool.
While most of these patches just amount to adding the new device ID for "PANTHERLAKE_R", it's looking in turn like Linux 7.4 is going to be the likely baseline for Rugged Panther Lake / Starfire given the importance of power management with today's hardware.
