Debian developers are discussing a general resolution whether to permit AI large language model (LLM) usage within the Debian software project.
The discussion period began today for evaluating LLM usage in Debian.
Choice #1 is to forbid any contributions written with the use or assistance of LLM or other generative AI tooling. This choice would cover Debian source packages, all Debian software, Debian web resources, documentation and translations, and other official communication from Debian.
The other option is to allow AI-assisted contributions within Debian. But the AI/LLM-assisted contributions would need to meet tooling legal compatibility, licensing and attribution, accountability, disclosure, and more.
Those interested in this Debian General Resolution (GR) can find the proposals laid out via [1]the Debian vote page .
