Graviton5 Outperforming Intel Xeon Granite Rapids But Falls Short Of AMD EPYC Turin

Following the recent GA of the AWS M9g series as the first instances powered by the new Graviton5 CPUs, I recently ran benchmarks looking at [1]Graviton4 vs. Graviton5 CPU performance . There was very nice generational gains for the new AWS Graviton processors with the shift from Arm Neoverse-V2 to Neoverse-V3 cores and from DDR5-5600 to DDR5-8800 memory, among other improvements. For those wondering how the Graviton5 ARM server processors compare to AMD EPYC and Intel Xeon, here are some additional comparison data points from the Amazon EC2 cloud.

Complementing those m8g.4xlarge vs. m9g.4xlarge benchmarks from last week for looking at Graviton4 vs. Graviton5 at the same vCPU/core count, here are the numbers now with including m8a.4xlarge and m8i.4xlarge as the latest AMD EPYC and Intel Xeon powered offerings in the M series EC2 instance types.

The Amazon EC2 M8a instances are powered by AMD 5th Generation EPYC "Turin" processors using a semi-custom AMD EPYC 9R45 SKU with a maximum frequency of 4.5GHz for M8a instances. Each vCPU with M8a is backed by a physical CPU core (no SMT). The M8a instances are making use of DDR5-6400 memory. The m8a.4xlarge on-demand pricing as of tested came in at $0.97376 USD per hour, which is well above the $0.78272 per hour on-demand pricing of the new m8g.4xlarge powered by Graviton5.

The Amazon EC2 M8i instances are powered by Intel Xeon 6 Granite Rapids processors, the semi-custom Intel Xeon 6975P-C. The Xeon 6 CPUs for the M8i instances feature an all-core turbo frequency of 3.9GHz. Unlike the M8g/M9g and M8a instances that feature a physical CPU core for each vCPU, the M8i relies on a mix of the physical core and sibling thread. So for the m8i.4xlarge it's made up of eight physical CPU cores plus the HT sibling. The M8i instance was also using DDR5-7200 memory even though the Xeon 6900 series is capable of supporting MRDIMM-8800 memory. The on-demand hourly pricing for the m8i.4xlarge came in at $0.84672, which is cheaper than the m8a.4xlarge instance but still more than the m9g.4xlarge and while having just half the number of physical cores.

All of these 4xlarge instances are equipped with 64GB of system memory. I benchmarked all four instance types while running Ubuntu 26.04 LTS with the Linux 7.0 kernel and GCC 15.2 compiler.

Let's see how the performance compares for Graviton5 up against Intel and AMD's current x86_64 server processors.
