FFmpeg Introduces Vulkan APV Encoder

([Multimedia] 6 Hours Ago FFmpeg Vulkan Encoder For APV)

Back in May the FFmpeg project [1]introduced Vulkan-accelerated decoding for the APV video format . The Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec was being handled using Vulkan shaders in a similar way to how [2]FFmpeg implemented Vulkan acceleration for Apple ProRes . Now there is Vulkan-accelerated APV encoding too.

FFmpeg developer Lynne who is responsible for much of the Vulkan magic within the FFmpeg multimedia library has landed "apv_encode_vulkan" as the first Vulkan APV encoder out there. This complements Lynne's earlier Vulkan APV decode efforts.

As of today this new Vulkan API encoder is [3]merged in FFmpeg Git.

APV is the leading open-source alternative to Apple's ProRes video codec that is supported from the likes of Samsung to DaVinci Resolve for high fidelity, high quality video content. APV is also supported on Google Android 16+. The [4]OpenAPV project provides a CPU-based APV encoder/decoder while now in the FFmpeg space we are seeing this Vulkan support for GPU acceleration.
