Yesterday AMD kicked off Computex 2026 in announcing the Radeon RX 9070 GRE alongside a number of other product announcements. With the Radeon RX 9070 GRE going on sale today, the review embargo has now lifted on this new RDNA 4 consumer graphics card slated to be priced around $549 USD. Here is an initial look at the Linux performance benchmarks of this new AMD graphics card offering.
[2]
The AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE features 48 RDNA4 compute units, 48 ray-tracing accelerators, 96 AI accelerators, and a 2.79GHz boost clock. The RX 9070 GRE features 12GB of GDDR6 video memory and a 220 Watt board power rating. The Radeon RX 9070 for comparison has 56 compute units, 56 ray-tracing accelerators, 112 AI accelerators, and a 2.5GHz boost clock while having a similar 220 Watt board power rating. Or the Radeon RX 9070 XT comes in at 64 compute units and ray accelerators, 128 AI accelerators, and a 2.97GHz boost clock for that 304 Watt rated graphics card with 16GB of video memory.
[3]
The Radeon RX 9070 GRE is positioned to go head-to-head with NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 5060 Ti Blackwell graphics card. The RX 9070 GRE pricing starts out at $549 compared to the RTX 5060 Ti at $569+. With 12GB of video memory, its predominantly focused on the 1440p gaming experience for Windows gamers.
[4]
In advance of today's embargo lift, AMD provided an XFX Radeon RX 9070 GRE graphics card for Linux review/testing at Phoronix.
[5]
The Radeon RX 9070 GRE provides DisplayPort 2.1a and HDMI 2.1b outputs. The HDMI 2.1 outputs are nice now that the AMDGPU open-source Linux driver is finally working to upstream their HDMI 2.1 support at long last.
[6]
With the 220 Watt board power, two eight pin PCIe power connectors are required for the RX 9070 GRE.
[7]
The Radeon RX 9070 GRE was working perfectly fine out-of-the-box on Ubuntu 26.04 with the Linux 7.0 kernel and Mesa 26.0. It was pleasant seeing the Radeon RX 9070 GRE working smoothly out-of-the-box on the current Ubuntu LTS release without any extra steps to jump through, then again the AMD RDNA4 support at large these days is quite stable under Linux.
[8]
The Radeon RX 9070 GRE was also working on the current stable ROCm 7.2 compute stack too.
The graphics cards tested for this comparison included:
- Arc B570
- Arc B580
- RTX 5060 Ti
- RTX 5070
- RTX 5080
- RTX 5090
- RX 7800 XT
- RX 7900 GRE
- RX 7900 XT
- RX 7900 XTX
- RX 9060 XT
- RX 9070 GRE
- RX 9070
- RX 9070 XT
The Intel Arc and AMD Radeon graphics were tested on Linux 7.0 and Mesa 26.0 of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. The NVIDIA graphics were tested on their R595 Linux driver.
