A Devuan developer, the Linux distribution that provides a Debian-based operating system without dependence on systemd, is working on "gtk2-ng" for providing modern fixes and improvements to the old GTK2 toolkit.
While there isn't much upstream software still left on the GTK2 toolkit after the likes of Inkscape and GIMP transitioned over to GTK3, a Devuan developer has taken to enhancing the GTK2 toolkit in 2026 that hasn't been maintained by upstream GTK since it was declared end-of-life back in December 2020.
Devuan developer "Daemonratte" is working on this gtk2-ng fork to backport various improvements, backport features from other GTK2 forks, eliminating different errors and bugs, ensuring the toolkit is building nicely on the latest GCC compiler, and making other changes.
The fork was announced as a "GTK2 revival" in the [1]Devuan Forums .
The GTK2-NG code is hosted via the [2]git.devuan.org instance for those interested in using GTK2 in 2026.
