The GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) now has a working group established by their steering committee to study the use of AI and large language models (LLMs) within the context of GCC compiler development.
Stemming from ongoing questions and differing views over whether AI/LLMs belong in the area of GCC compiler development for aiding in the development of the compiler and/or code review processes and the like, the GCC Development AI Policy Working Group is going to make considerations and report back to the GCC Steering Committee with their recommendations.
The GCC Development AI Policy Working Group is being led by longtime developer Jonathan Wakely of Red Hat.

There is now a [2]GCC Wiki page devoted to this AI Policy Working Group. The stated goals are:
"The goal of the working group is to draft an initial preliminary recommended AI policy for gcc for the GCC SC to review to adopt for the project.
The assessment and justification behind the policy are as important as the policy itself, and as such a secondary goal is a detailed assessment section with external references.
Lastly, a goal of the working group should be to decide if a simpler initial policy should be released immediately while a more detailed policy is drafted by another working group. For example a simpler initial policy can clarify that assistive technologies based on LLMs are permitted."
They hope to provide their initial assessment in the next three months.
