Ghostty OpenGL-Accelerated Terminal Available On Ubuntu 26.04 LTS

Since Ubuntu 25.04 [1]Ptyxis has been the default terminal emulator after it [2]initially became available in Ubuntu 24.10 . For the upcoming Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release, Ptyxis remains the default but Ghostty is now available too.

Ghostty is an speedy terminal emulator that depends upon OpenGL accelerator to help with its performance. Ghostty is written in the Zig language.

Canonical engineer Pushkar Niranjan Kulkarni [4]announced today the availability of Ghostty in the universal archive for the imminent Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release.

This is just a preview option for those wanting to easily run Ghostty on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS with Ptyxis remaining the default on this long-term support release.

On Ubuntu 26.04, it's as easy as running sudo apt install ghostty .
