One of the early features for Fedora 45 that was approved this week is enabling IPv6-mostly support within NetworkManager for a more modern out-of-the-box network experience.

IPv6-mostly is the networking approach for primarily running on IPv6 but providing IPv4 connectivity just for the legacy devices needing it. IPv6-mostly is the balancing act between a full dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 network and going full bore on IPv6-only. IPv6-mostly relies on DHCPv4 option 108 and 464XLAT CLAT for reducing IPv4 address consumption without foregoing legacy device support on the network.

This incremental path toward going IPv6-only eases the transition. The plan for Fedora 45 is enabling the IPv6-mostly options within NetworkManager by default for going IPv6-mostly but retaining IPv4 support where needed to avoid any breakage.
