Ubuntu Maker Canonical Joins The Rust Foundation

([Ubuntu] 33 Minutes Ago Canonical + Rust Foundation)

Canonical announced today that they have joined the Rust Foundation as a Gold Member.

Ubuntu Linux continues ramping up its embrace of the Rust programming language. From shipping Rust Coreutils "uutils" in place of GNU Coreutils on Ubuntu 25.10+ to other Rust system tooling, Canonical has been quite proactive in shipping new Rust components in Ubuntu Linux on the basis of being modern and promoting better memory safety and security benefits.

Ahead of next month's Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release with the latest Rust components in tow, including the latest Rust compiler and Cargo, Canonical today joined the Rust Foundation as a gold member.

The gold membership level at the Rust Foundation costs $150k per year and allows companies access to the the Rust Foundation Board of Directors via a dedicated rep, promotion on their editorial calendar, and other opportunities. The gold level is a step below the platinum membership level that costs $325k per year and backed by organizations like Google, Amazon/AWS, Meta, Microsoft, and others. Rust Foundation membership details can be found [2]here .
