Using KMSCON As The Default VT Console Delayed To Fedora 45

([Fedora] 4 Hours Ago Fedora 44 Delays To F45)

For the past few months have been an ambitious proposal to [1]replace FBCON with the user-space KMSCON as the default VT console starting on Fedora 44. Unfortunately, this and a few other features have now been delayed to the Fedora 45 release six months later.

Fedora 44 will no longer be aiming to switch over to KMSCON as the default VT console. The [2]change proposal to replace the kernel console with this user-space solution has been diverted to being a Fedora 45 feature. Hopefully by October everything will be ready for Fedora Linux to lead the way with KMSCON usage by default.

Also delayed to Fedora 45 is modernizing Fedora's live media, expecting package builds to be reproducible, and other less notable changes that have been pushed back from Fedora 44 due to being incomplete at this stage of development. The plan for modernizing the Fedora Live media is around using setup scripts via livesys-scripts and new functionality provided by Dracut to enable support for automatically enabling persistent overlays when running off USB storage.

More details on the late feature activity around Fedora 44 and delays to Fedora 45 can be found via today's [3]FESCo meeting summary .

Fedora 44 is planned for beta next week while the current target date for its release is 14 April. Fedora 45 meanwhile is aiming to be out around 20 October.
