Flatpak 1.17 is out today as the newest feature release for this Linux app sandboxing/distribution tech. Flatpak 1.17 brings a number of exciting new features.
Flatpak 1.17 in conjunction with XDG-Desktop-Portal can now allow directories to be forwarded to the sandboxed app as command-line arguments.
Flatpak 1.17 also now allows direct installation from an OCI image. Flatpak also now supports side-loading from OCI repositories and archives. This allows apps to be installed from OCI images stored in local side-load repositories.
Flatpak also now lets apps that are conceptually part of the OS to be pre-installed by dropping the files into the preinstall.d directories.
Plus there is now support for flatpaK+https:// URIs in flatpak install --from handling.
There is also a new --clear-env option for flatpak run to clar the environment from the host before running the application, support for conditional permissions, enabling VA-API video acceleration for Intel Xe GPUs, JSON output support for more Flatpak commands, and various other improvements.
