Earlier this year Canonical announced plans for [1]using sudo-rs as the Rust-written sudo implementation by default for Ubuntu 25.10 along with [2]Rust Coreutils and other Rust system components . The sudo-rs goal has been achieved with the newest Ubuntu 25.10 daily ISOs now using this sudo implementation by default.
Canonical engineer Ravi Kant Sharma announced today that sudo-rs is now the default for Questing Quokka, the codename for Ubuntu 25.10. sudo-rs is the default sudo implementation on Ubuntu 25.10 and follows addressing some issues that came up during testing. sudo-rs has also made it as part of the Ubuntu Minimal base system.
There still is some work to finish up though such as some integration tests, various bug fixes, and working toward Ubuntu 26.10 where they plan to have sudo-rs as the only sudo provider in the Ubuntu main archive. This goal being realized for Ubuntu 25.10 is important to allow for sufficient testing prior to the very important Ubuntu 26.04 LTS cycle.
Those wanting to learn more about sudo-rs now being used by default on Ubuntu 25.10 can do so via [3]today's Ubuntu Discourse announcement .
