Canonical Decides To Double Down On Their Investment In Java For Ubuntu

([Ubuntu] 3 Hours Ago OpenJDK Java + Ubuntu)

Ubuntu maker Canonical has decided to "double down" their investment in OpenJDK Java for Ubuntu Linux.

Canonical announced this morning their new builds of OpenJDK for Ubuntu Linux. The emphasis is on satisfying Ubuntu Pro paying customers but can help community users of Ubuntu Linux too.

Canonical is committing to supporting OpenJDK 8 on Ubuntu Pro until 2034 and at least 12 years of support for every other OpenJDK LTS release. They are also working to ensure timely access of new Java releases on Ubuntu releases, new performance optimizations, verified correctness, and ensuring broad architecture support. Canonical is vetting their OpenJDK Java support across Intel/AMD x86_64, ARM64, s390x, RISC-V, and POWER PPC64EL.

Ubuntu Pro subscriptions will extend to a minimum 10-year security support guarantee for all OpenJDK LTS builds, with the widely-used OpenJDK Java 8 planned support with Ubuntu Pro being 20 years in lasting until 2034. While Linux users like talking about Rust and other modern programming languages these days -- including Canonical working to make use of more Rust infrastructure in Ubuntu -- Java continues to be quite popular in enterprise environments.

Those curious about Canonical's plans around OpenJDK support on Ubuntu can find more details via the [2]Canonical.com blog .

She stood on the tracks
Waving her arms
Leading me to that third rail shock
Quick as a wink
She changed her mind

She gave me a night
That's all it was
What will it take until I stop
Kidding myself
Wasting my time

There's nothing else I can do
'Cause I'm doing it all for Leyna
I don't want anyone new
'Cause I'm living it all for Leyna
There's nothing in it for you
'Cause I'm giving it all to Leyna
