AMD Strix Point & Intel Lunar Lake: Windows 11 vs. Ubuntu 25.04 Linux Performance

([Operating Systems] 3 Hours Ago 3 Comments)

Last month was a fresh look at the [1]Intel Lunar Lake graphics performance between Windows and Linux while this article is Microsoft Windows 11 Pro vs. Ubuntu 25.04 again but looking at the CPU performance between these competing operating systems. For additional reference, some of the recently completed [2]AMD Strix Point Windows vs. Linux benchmarks were also included for additional insight.

This article is focused on the Microsoft Windows 11 Pro vs. Ubuntu Linux 25.04 performance on the [4]Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura powered by the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V Lunar Lake SoC. As last month I also tested the [5]Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 with AMD Ryzen AI 7 PRO 360 , including Windows vs. Linux benchmarks, I included those numbers as well for this latest-generation CPU comparison to provide additional insight into the Windows vs. Linux performance differences for these latest-gen Intel Lunar Lake and AMD Strix Point laptops.

The AMD Strix Point laptop (ThinkPad T14s Gen 6) had the AMD Ryzen AI 7 PRO 360 8-core processor, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB Kioxia NVMe SSD. The Intel Lunar Lake laptop (ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura) had the Core Ultra 7 258V 8-core processor with 32GB of onboard memory, and 512GB Samsung NVMe SSD.

Both laptops had been tested on their stock, out-of-the-box Microsoft Windows 11 Pro installations with all stable release updates as of testing. This was then compared to Ubuntu 25.04 with a clean install and all stock software packages while looking at the CPU performance across a range of workloads native to both Windows and Linux.

"Many have seen Topaxci, God of the Red Mushroom, and they earn the
name of shaman," he said. Some have seen Skelde, spirit of the smoke, and
they are called sorcerers. A few have been privileged to see Umcherrel, the
soul of the forest, and they are known as spirit masters. But none have
seen a box with hundreds of legs that looked at them without eyes, and they
are known as idio--"
The interruption was caused by a sudden screaming noise and a flurry
of snow and sparks that blew the fire across the dark hut; there was a brief
blurred vision and then the opposite wall was blasted aside and the
apparition vanished.
There was a long silence. Then a slightly shorter silence. Then
the old shaman said carefully, "You didn't just see two men go through
upside down on a broomstick, shouting and screaming at each other, did you?"
The boy looked at him levelly. "Certainly not," he said.
The old man heaved a sigh of relief. "Thank goodness for that," he
said. "Neither did I."
