Fedora 43 Looking At RPM 6.0, JPEG-XL Wallpapers & Other Early Change Proposals

([Fedora] 3 Hours Ago Fedora 43)

Fedora 42 isn't even releasing until next month but a number of early change proposals have been filed for the upcoming Fedora 43 development cycle that will be released this autumn.

Most notable of the early pull requests so far for Fedora 43 is updating RPM against the upcoming RPM 6.0 major release. RPM 6.0 will enhance package security by enforcing signature checking by default, OpenPGP key handling improvements, support for multiple signatures per package, automatic signing on package build, and support for signing with Sequoia-sq as a GnuPG alternative. RPM 4.x will be oging into maintenance mode with the RPM 6.0 release. Yes, it's jumping ahead to RPM 6.0 to avoid the [1]RPM5 confusion.

The [2]change proposal does make clear that this proposal isn't about changing to the v6 package format:

"Update RPM to the upcoming 6.0 release for several security improvements.

Note: adopting Fedora to the new v6 package package format is explicitly NOT IN SCOPE for this change. RPM 6.0 in Fedora 43 will ship with v4 package generation as default, regardless of the upstream default."

Some of the other early change proposals for Fedora 43 include [3]deprecating the GNU Gold linker , [4]migrating to lastlog2 , and [5]retiring gtk3-rs and other associated libraries for these GTK3 Rust bindings.

There is also a Fedora 43 change proposal for [6]switching to using JPEG-XL for the default wallpaper format rather than PNG images. JPEG-XL is argued the preferred desktop wallpaper format for reducing the file size compared to PNG images.

What Did Santa Claus Bring You In 1999? (#2)

WEBMASTER OF LINUXSUPERMEGAPORTAL.COM: One of my in-laws gifted me a
CD-ROM containing the text of every "...For Dummies" book ever published.
It's a shame IDG never published "Hiring A Hitman To Knock Off Your
Inlaws... For Dummies", because that's something I'm itching to do. At any
rate, I'm using the CD as a beer coaster.

JESSE BERST: I got a coupon redeemable for the full copy of Windows 2000
when it comes out in February. Win2K is the most innovative,
enterprise-ready, stable, feature-enriched, easy-to-use operating system
on the market. I don't see how Linux can survive against Microsoft's far
superior offering. I ask you: could you get fired for NOT choosing Windows
2000? You bet.

LINUX CONVERT: I kept hinting for a SGI box, but instead my wife got me an
old Packard Bell. Unfortunately, she bought it at CompUSSR, which doesn't
take returns, so I'm stuck with it. I haven't been able to get Linux to
boot on it, so this machine will probably become a $750 paperweight.
