Baker: Changing World, Changing Mozilla

([Briefs] Aug 11, 2020 18:54 UTC (Tue) (corbet))

Mitchell Baker [1]writes about changes at Mozilla , headlined by the laying-off of 250 people. " Recognizing that the old model where everything was free has consequences, means we must explore a range of different business opportunities and alternate value exchanges. How can we lead towards business models that honor and protect people while creating opportunities for our business to thrive? How can we, or others who want a better internet, or those who feel like a different balance should exist between social and public benefit and private profit offer an alternative? "

I hope we don't end up with just one main browser engine code base and fork (Apple Webkit and Google Blink) that would not be good for the browser ecosystem/standards process, etc.

I trust that Mitchell Baker is also cutting her own $2,485,749 annual salary (2018, from the IRS form 990 of the Mozilla Foundation), accordingly?

Should Mitchell Baker give most of 1 billion back to Mozilla?

Wait, this has been going on for years. Nearly a billion dollars in the past seven years!?

Rather than a pay cut, at what point can we talk asking this money be returned to Mozilla?

Should Mitchell Baker give most of 1 billion back to Mozilla?

I guess the fair question here is, how much does the CEO of a tech company of a similar size make?

If they make that amount, well it's reasonable that Firefox makes that much, we don't want to "punish" financially people that want to develop Free Software, right?

Unfortunately, Mozilla has succeeded in pushing everyone away from using Gecko as a rendering engine years ago (ok, maybe except for KaiOS), so there isn't really anyone left who would have an interest in keeping the rendering engine alive (other than Mozilla itself).

Baker: Changing World, Changing Mozilla

"Pushing everyone away" might not be a fair description of why Gecko isn't used more widely.

While I agree that "pushing" is a a too strong word, Mozilla roughly 10 years ago effectively abandoned support for embedding various components. As a former Mozillian in retrospect I think it was wrong. But at that point it looked reasonable to focus more on Firefox and try to compete with Chrome.

No, that's entirely accurate. For desktop apps we have Electron, CEF, QtWebEngine, webkit-gtk, or… dillo. And for web apps, why even bother supporting Firefox when you can just tell users to download the desktop app (and violate their privacy a little easier)?

Mozilla's past decade has just been one leadership blunder after another.

Baker: Changing World, Changing Mozilla

Some 5 years ago I was looking for a rendering engine for a simple tablet with controls (for home automation). The idea was to run a cut-down browser as the sole X application.

I first tried Gecko because I want to support browser diversity. I couldn't find any working guides on how to embed it. I played around with it for a bit and gave up, these days Mozilla warns you right away: [1]https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Gecko/Em...

With WebKit I was able to do everything in an evening. I simply wrote a QT application in PyQT with an embedded browser and a web-server. It was ridiculously easy.

These content-free "we're sorry we had to lay people off" press releases are always exactly the same press release, whether it's a giant for-profit or, well, Mozilla.

- "significant restructuring" (euphemism for "firing people we can't afford to pay").

- "strengthen our ability to build and invest in [whatever]" (by virtue of not being broke).

- Squeezing all talk of layoffs into 2-3 paragraphs and then pivoting towards how great the future is going to be. To their credit, 2-3 paragraphs is above average, compared to other examples I've seen.

- "core values"

- "Mozilla must be a [positive adjectives] organization. That means [more positive adjectives]. To start, that means products that [solve problems]. Over the longer run, our goal is to [make better products]."

I'm sure there's more, I just got tired of looking for it.

If you aren't rich you should always look useful.
